Remove Distractions When Training Your Yorkie

- A responsible Yorkshire terrier breeder seeks to produce dogs that are standard size. Code of ethics guidelines prohibit breeders from labeling their dogs as teacup, micro or any other size, according to Gale Thompson, Yorkshire Terrier Club of America. Very small Yorkshire dogs frequently have genetic and health problems, according to Thompson. Breeding runts is a common way to produce teacup dogs, according to Vet Confidential writer Louise Murray, who has a doctorate in veterinary medicine, and received a diploma from the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
Health
- Some health issues of teacup dogs include whelping problems, low blood sugar, liver shunts, dental problems, fragile bones and other orthopedic issues, according to Murray. - Yorkshire terriers don't have large bladders and won't be able to go for hours on end without having an accident. Take your Yorkie outside first thing in the morning, 15 minutes to half an hour after each meal, immediately before and after crating it, and before bed. Use Positive Reinforcement
- Positive reinforcement training methods rely on a system of rewards to show a dog when it is doing the right thing. The advantages of this method include not having to punish your dog, avoiding potential behavior problems that result from fear of punishment and the ability to teach your Yorkie what you expect it to do. Purchase your Yorkie's favorite doggy snacks and reward it with one every time it relieves itself in the yard. Include praise in the reward as well. This is not an official AKC breed or classification, however; Yorkies of any size are classified only as toy (very small) terriers. Undersized Yorkies tend to have serious health risks and physical complications. Anyone who is looking to buy a Yorkie should be cautious of breeders or pet stores advertising teacup Yorkies; these are probably not reputable sellers.

Problems With Teacup Yorkies

  Any Yorkie with a predicted adult weight of less than 4 pounds has many risks of health complications. These tiny dogs tend to have fragile bones and health conditions such as hypoglycemia. Gauging Your Yorkie's Size
- To estimate how big a Yorkie will get, triple the weight of an 8-week-old puppy or double the weight of a 12-week-old puppy. An average Yorkie will weigh about 2 pounds at 12 weeks old. If you are unsure of the dog's weight, ask the seller to weigh the dog in front of you. Any breeder who refuses to do so may be unscrupulous.
Buying a Yorkie
